‘Skin Deep’, my modern retelling of the Snow White classic is featured in ‘A is for Apple’.
Well, it’s been a while since the last post, hasn’t it? There’s a lot of distractions in the world right now, and I don’t think I’m alone in finding it hard to concentrate at the moment. I’ve spent most of my energy on writing, keeping my long-running streak of writing every day - and in fact yesterday I reached 200 days in a row!
But that came at the cost of this blog. I didn’t have a lot to say, and so it was hard to muster up any enthusiasm for blogging when most of the posts would have been ‘still at home, nothing much to report’.
But now there is something to report! One of my short stories is being published as part of an exciting anthology. The book is called ‘A is for Apple’, and is a collection of six retellings of the Snow White story.
I’m sure you are all familiar with the tale, in one of its many variations. Perhaps the Disney version is best-known, but I decided to go back to the original Grimm Brothers version for inspiration. And it’s very dark, as many of their tales were before they were later sanitised for easier consumption.
I took the themes of vanity, jealousy and revenge and considered what would be a good vehicle for exploring those sides of human nature. I decided that the online beauty community could, at its worst moments, be tailor-made for this story.
And so ‘Skin Deep’ was born. Along with five other stories it was selected for the anthology, which if all goes well should be the first in a series of similar books.
And it’s out on Friday (3rd July, 2020 if you’re reading this in the future)!
You can pre-order now , the eBook is only 99p/99c for the next few days. If you have Kindle Unlimited then you can read it for free, as part of your membership. There’s a paperback available also, for those of us who still prefer the feel of paper.
I’m very excited about this, the other stories in the anthology are amazing and explore a remarkable variety of themes and settings.
If you do pick it up, I’d love to know which is your favourite - let me know on twitter !
